One important criteria was that I wanted to be in the intown part of the city," shares Heather Alhadeff, an Atlanta city planner. "It was important to be near MARTA, to be able to walk to places, friends and destinations, whether to a restaurant, bar or the Dome or Philips Arena. I lived downtown for 10 years but the distinction about Castleberry is that it's very livable, very walkable and it's a very tight neighborhood group, it's like an extension of our family.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

Near the loft's entry Alhadeff has assembled: "an old fireplace mantel [which] one day I hope to create a fake fire where the brickwork is; an abacus that's been in my family's home since I was a little girl; and a Korean kimono I found at an estate sale in Buckhead. It's got a copper pipe holding it up.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

My little brother likes the fact that I have old things in my loft, he found this old phone (pictured) from the 80s and thought it was a great look," comments Alhadeff. "There is a piece of art I got in the neighborhood that was a fundraiser for children in Africa -- I play soccer -- it's a little boy who drew a picture of himself playing soccer, I kinda have an attachment to that.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

His full name is Jackson, I call him Jacks, he's a rescue dog somebody left tied to a tree and was almost a goner," recalls Alhadeff. "Somebody on my soccer team found him. He's well loved in the neighborhood. There's lots of dogs. We're working on an off-leash dog park. He's 4, I sent in for DNA [analysis], he's: Whippet, white Sheppard, English Hound, German Shorthair Pointer, and for some reason even Dachshund -- I don't see it. He's the mutt of all mutts, but he is absolutely the best dog.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

I like the couch, it's very comfortable, a lot of people can sit on it," offers Alhadeff. "One thing that's funny to most people is the size of my TV. There's always been a man in the group [of visitors] that says politely that they're kind of floored, like why is your TV so small. It's not that important to me. I think that is kind of funny.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

I like the old record player (pictured) I found in an antique place in Athens," shares Alhadeff. "The chairs I have are from my great-great grandmother, so there's little things with history but there's also new furniture. That's one thing about this space, the common denominator is variety, there's nothing of one particular era, time or theme, what's nice about lofts is that you can pull that off. That creativity and difference is what makes lofts more unique.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

The kitchen is the main focus of the house. It's so much fun when we've gotten groups together for Sunday dinner, everybody loves it," attests Alhadeff. "There's enough room that everybody can do their dish and have their own fun. Most people tend to gravitate to where the food is so by doing it as part of the center of the space you're still in the main part of the house. Pressed stainless steel from Germany adorns the columns. "It's a nice modern effect for an old space," says Alhadeff.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

If you had told me one day in my life that I'd be living in a space that is dominated by the color orange I would have laughed, but because it's pulled out from the bricks and it's part of the colors of the stone, over time it pulls it together really well, I like it a lot," admits Alhadeff.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

Since her New Year's party that attracted 90 attendees, Alhadeff has hosted "a women's support group that needed a space to meet on Fridays, dinners, and family gatherings. New Year's was a big party, the DJ was upstairs (pictured here is the perspective from the home-office/guest quarters).
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

The build-out was done [by previous owner], I'm not the kind of person that would be comfortable renovating a space for many years," admits Alhadeff. "I needed to walk in and not have projects forever. To me that was an asset. I like the fact that it has a lot of windows, while it has division of space you do have one large space.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

I would say it's a true loft but [with] a very cozy, livable feel. My goal here is to make it a very comfortable space, warm and entertaining, and fun place to be in." A fabrication of industrial lighting (pictured) warms and illuminates the dining area.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

Window treatments in the master suite were sourced at Ikea: "You don't expect it, it fits perfect, these windows are literally floor to ceiling, this adds color, it's kind of dramatic [and] draws your eye up. I know people would like to think of it as some amazingly expensive feature but it is Ikea, this is the beauty of Ikea." By elevating the suite, large storage compartments (notice drawer handle near steps) were created. "There is absolutely no lack of storage space in this loft.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

What I like about [the bathroom] is that the cabinets are the same as the ones in the kitchen," comments Alhadeff, "so there's the similarity as far as color and something that your eye is familiar with." Not having a door to her master bath "does tend to shock a lot of people at first when they come in. It's a breeze to clean, I like the towel warmer and the tiles are Italian. He [previous owner] did a good job in picking up the color of the old bricks in the tile.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

It's a second bedroom," comments Alhadeff about the upstairs open-air room. "I use it mainly as my home-office or when I want a reading space that's not my couch. I'll hang out up there. I like the skylight, even though I'm in the same space you can see everything and I still feel like I'm in a different room. I go in there and I feel like I'm at my desk doing work not like on my sofa with a computer.
Samples nice home decoration 2009 2010

They [home tour guests] ask about the neighborhood, about the building, a lot of people ask about the shower [near master suite] of course," recounts Alhadeff of the last time her home was on the Castleberry Hill Loft Tour. "Most women asked if I feel uncomfortable, not really. There's another shower (in an enclosed second bathroom, pictured) if I have a guest. It's not frequent that you're taking a shower while you have people over so it's a non-issue.

2009 2010 Family home built by a legend: Marci and Joseph White (pictured with daughter Lily) say their Virginia Highland home was built in 1910 by baseball legend Ty Cobb for his mother Amanda Chitwood Cobb, who lived there until her passing in 1936. She lived here with Ty's younger brother, Paul Cobb, and his sister, Florence Cobb.

We were looking for a walking-friendly, neighborhood feel, a place with sidewalks," notes Joseph. "I like old houses, we were looking for a certain architectural style, as we looked around Atlanta we gravitated to this area.

The fireplace is marble, it was most likely refinished in the last 10 years; an original fireplace probably would have been brick," states Joseph. Sean Drakes.

Joseph points to this chair in the living room as being, "one of the best forms of the Craftsman Morris chair, it's also a signed Gustav Stickley -- that costs as much as a car.

A lady's writing desk in the living room is valued at $3,000 - $4,000, according to Joseph. "If it were a Harvey Ellis inlay it would have been $8,000 - $15,000.

Architectural designer Jimmy Carrion designed the White's gourmet kitchen which is appointed with a six-burner Viking gas stove with a double-oven and griddle.

The kitchen features cabinets by James Henry for Southern Cabinet Design and custom-made hardware. Custom builds were done for a wine fridge and microwave to streamline the kitchen's aesthetic. Light fixtures are reproductions that retain the decor integrity of 1910.

The dining room has what started my collection of Gustav Stickley furniture; the pieces are from 1902-1910," states Joseph. "When we moved in we were trying to figure out what dining room we would do, I started looking at the Craftsman furniture which is to the period. The rounds (dining table) are very rare. A dealer helped me put together the dining room over a period of two years.

Joseph is particularly proud of their dining room because it contains a full complement of Craftsman style pieces in keeping with the layout of dining rooms of the early 1900s.

Joseph says the server in the dining room dates to 1906. "The High Museum [in Atlanta] has one exactly like it." The original painting is by Italian artist Antonio Benedetto whom the Whites met while in Southern Italy.

Mounted in the master suite is a Venetian lace christening gown sourced from the Venetian Lace School in Venice. It was used to baptize both of the White's daughters. The Whites noticed no one in their generation had one to preserve tradition so they went to Venice to pass on the tradition to their daughters, who will baptize their daughters in that dress.

Here's a nursery with a gentle, feminine touch. A soft pink color scheme is combined with a round crib and bunny shelves on the wall.

Oeuf's Sparrow crib comes with a water-based finish ($690, Giggle).

This bright and lively nursery includes a skylight and small office space, perfect for working moms who want to keep an eye on the baby.

Furniture and decor should be safe, functional and fun. Aunt Bucky's Granny Garden crib bumper set, right, is colorful and whimsical ($225, The Pajama Squid). Alvar Aalto's children's chair comes in four heights ($385, Kidonyc.com).

The blue and white checked canopy treatment above the crib adds flair to this nursery room.

Still like the classic themed nursery? You don't have to be an amazing artist to add flair to the baby's nursery, just be inventive. Steve Welsh painted the Dr. Seuss characters in his baby daughter Isabelle's nursery. Welsh developed a method for projecting an image on the wall to draw it, then painted it to match Dr. Seuss characters.

home decor tips, Dorm decor gets a stylish makeover: Myriam Poirier sits in her fashionable dorm living room at Oglethorpe University. It's not that difficult to turn a boring dorm room into a stylish living area.

If you are allowed to paint the walls in your school's dorm, don't paint them with school colors, Flynn says. It's cliche.

Using a table with a center pole can turn an ordinary desktop into a four-seat dinner table, creative space, game table or study area. The key is to fill the small space with versatile pieces of furniture.

Interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn decorated Amani Nowell's bedroom to look like a studio apartment.

This G.S.U. dorm room was decorated with items from The Dollar Store, proving stylish decor doesn't have to be expensive.

Sahara McGraw's Oglethorpe University dorm room was redesigned after she won a $500 shopping spree from a radio contest.

Some dorm rooms benefit from interesting architectural details, such as the 'Tower Rooms' at Agnes Scott, which were once voted the best in the nation.

  • 2009 Home decor news, Clocks tell time in style

    16 October 2009

2009 Home decor news: At this year's recent New York International Gift Fair, it wasn't hard to keep track of the time.

There were interesting clocks on every aisle: digital and analog, with hands formed out of slivers of steel, forks, Lego, romping cows, even little plastic insects (on a clock shaped like a flyswatter).

Stylish or silly, design studios have fun concocting clever ways to combine artistry and timekeeping.

As a decor accent, you can't go wrong with a cool clock. It's the epitome of form and function.

Aston Sutton's Wave Clock has Italian Murano tempered glass of a blue mosaic design inspired by the church of Santa Marai Dei Fiori.

AP Photo, Cool Clock Shop Aston Sutton's Wave Clock has Italian Murano tempered glass of a blue mosaic design inspired by the church of Santa Marai Dei Fiori.

Reproduction enamelware kitchen or classroom clocks look great in both cooking and play spaces; check Generationstores.com and Thewallclockshop.com.

Modernists can accent a clean-lined space with sleek aluminum, glass or wood clocks. There are designer clocks to be found, original and repro, from Frank Lloyd Wright, George Nelson and Arne Jacobsen.

Pick up a tone in the room with a colored clock face, or bold graphic numbers. You'll find good selections at Coolclockshop.com and Crateandbarrel.com.

Many of these styles work well with mid-century, Craftsman or minimalist decor. We're not talking about those bulky grandfather clocks that are difficult to decorate around, or prim, traditional mantel clocks. The trick is to treat the clock as one more artistic element in your room; it should add a touch of surprise, and even drama.

Based on railway engineer Hans Hilfiker's 1940s classic, the Swiss Railway Station Clock is a standard throughout European train stations, with over 3,000 clocks keeping precision time. The straightforward black and white face with a red second hand is easy to read from a distance. Made by Mondaine with a brushed steel case and German clock movement.

Machine cogs are popular cleaned and polished; the industrial design is fun and functional.

Faux vintage advertising makes a decorative backdrop for a simple mechanism, and coordinates well with French or English Country decor. Look for examples at Modernclocks.net and Coolstuffcheap.com.

Cuckoo clocks have found favor among trendsetters recently. Kikkerland.com has a deconstructed one in several shades, while Momento Italia has a clever version with a tree graphic on a slab of wenge or black wood, with a little bird appearing on the hour to the sound of waterfalls.

Fred Flare's Early Bird alarm clock would be a nice way to wake up; the clock face features a bright blue sky, and a little bird glows to simulate the morning sun. Another fun alarm for style-savvy early birds comes from Italy: Conran's USA has the Vespa headlight-inspired alarm clock that reflects the vogue of '60s-era Rome; retro alarm clocks are a great way to hit the hip decor button on a small scale.

For iconic clocks, look at MOMA's reproductions of Hans Hilfiker's Swiss Railway Clock, the stalwart European rail station timepiece. They've also got Vitra Design Museum's 1949 George Nelson Sunburst clock in aluminum and oak. There are cheaper knockoffs if you're just after the look; check online.

Pictured here is the Alexandre Martinot Wall Clock, which is a reproduction of an original in painted wood and aged brass.

AP Photo, Cool Clock Shop/HO Pictured here is the Alexandre Martinot Wall Clock, which is a reproduction of an original in painted wood and aged brass.

A mid-century-style clock evokes the era without resorting to specific artwork, or even much in the way of furniture.

And remember, a clock doesn't need to function to "work"; an intriguing old metal clock face, or something oversized, is a wonderful sculptural element on its own that adds surprise and interest.

As Elsa Michelson, the Encinitas, Calif.-based owner of online shop Modern Clocks, points out, "There's something about a great timepiece that puts the finishing touch anywhere."

  • 2009 Home decor news, 5 tips for quick interior fixes

    15 October 2009

2009 Home decor news - Bad day? Blame your condo. That's what designer Lori Ludwick might do, especially if your home looks as if it's in dire need of some TLC.

For Ludwick, the way people's homes look and function can affect everything from their temperaments to their pocketbooks. "I think a well-designed space influences your mood so much," says Ludwick, principal designer at InDesign in suburban Alexandria, Va. "I want each of my spaces to reflect the owner's personality more than my own. And I want every client to want to come home to this very personal space every day."

When housing prices were going through the roof, many homeowners simply fixed up the properties for the next buyers in hopes of big returns on their investments, rather than settling in for the long haul. But as the economy prompts more owners to stay put, people are increasingly interested in creating a personal space they love. According to Ludwick, who has practiced residential and commercial design here since 1994, it's as important to enjoy your home as it is to add value for when it's time to move on.

"Even if you're not selling your home, your environment impacts the way you feel about everything so much," Ludwick says. "Little improvements ... will help you live better."

Ludwick offered five easy fixes, all of which can be done over a weekend, to make home a hipper, healthier place.

    Try a New Hue

"A coat of paint can go a long way in freshening up your interior," Ludwick says. "Clean walls convey a clean house in good working order. Remember the ceiling: It's the fifth wall."

Ludwick favors paints from Duron and Benjamin Moore and says there are no "awful" colors to avoid: "It's more how you use them and where."

    Delight in Your Lights

"Remove those old brass hardware-store lighting fixtures; they're not doing anyone any favors," she says. "Replace them with a fixture matching the period of your home or a more modern fixture to add interest and improve the overall feel of the space."

For period reproductions, Ludwick turns to the catalogue from Rejuvenation.

    Accent the Architecture

"Decorative moldings around the ceiling, floor, doorways or windows can give a builder-grade house a more luxurious feel," Ludwick says. "Make sure the moldings keep with the character of your home. And stay away from standard 2 1/4-inch moldings; bigger is better."

    Use Modern Appliances

This is a way to make a big impact without much effort, even if you're on a budget, Ludwick says. New appliances, no matter how many bells and whistles they have, are more energy-efficient and will function better than older ones. And you don't need to shell out for the stainless-steel machines that buyers on HGTV's "House Hunters" always salivate over.

"A lot of people are finding stainless steel kind of cold," she says. "White is always a good classic standby."

    Toss Tired Fixtures

"Switching out your old bathroom faucet with a shiny new one makes a big impact," Ludwick says. "Make sure you're matching the finish of the rest of the fixtures in the room. And because the faucet is something you touch every day, it's worth the money to spend a little more for a quality fixture." She recommends a matte chrome or nickel finish and likes the selection at Ferguson Enterprises
